I am on a Treasure Hunt

“Look for the Good.”
When I sit down to read my Bible, I am not just spending a dutiful 15 minutes. Instead, I am on a treasure hunt. With either pencil or highlighter in hand, I read with anticipation until something speaks to my spirit.
Underlining or highlighting those words makes it more personable and helps to etch it in my heart.
This small action causes me to anticipate the discovery of nuggets of truth that the Word of God is so full of.
This process came to mind recently as I listened to our administrative assistant address our team. Nastasia said that being in upper management on her job, she tries not to look only for areas that need to be corrected or fixed, although that is part of her job description. Instead, she looks for reasons to celebrate and for that which is going well. She went on to admonish us to always have something to celebrate.
As someone that is usually looking for a reason to throw a party, I jumped right in to that concept.
I decided that this year, I will look for the good. With “highlighter” in hand, I want to anticipate what God has for me in 2025.
I am certain that too often we miss the joys that are found in our everyday life.
Such things might be the laughter of a child at play, the smell of dinner cooking, the blessing of family sitting around a table together at mealtime.
Other things might be celebrating the wonder of another birthday of our aging loved ones, or a long planned-for holiday or trip. It could be as grand as building a church to meet the needs of a growing congregation, or as simple as mastering a new recipe or accomplishing the art of baking bread (thank you very much).
Going on a hike is not just about reaching the end of a trail, but of taking in the beauty along the way. The same should be said for our life. Train yourself to look for joy along the journey, not just for what lies at the end of our journey.
What if you looked forward to what lies ahead, in the same way that you experienced the thrill of a scavenger hunt when you were a child?
I know stormy days will come, as ordained of God, but even on those days, I want to look for the good in what will ultimately grow and mature me.

If this is not an easy task for you, ask God to help you discover beauty along the way.
Keep a journal of the hidden gems and treasures that you will uncover just because you are looking for them.
Write down and continually add to a collection of memories made and memorable moments that you don’t want to forget.
You will find that when you look for reasons to celebrate, you will surely find them.
I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Ps. 27:14 …
Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Ps. 103:1-5 …
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Rom 15:13 …
